NOM Rejection by, and Fouling of, NF and UF Membranes

چکیده
OBJECTIVES: The performance of spiral-wound nanofiltration (NF) and ultrafiltration (UF) membranes was investigated in terms of natural organic matter (NOM) rejection and associated NOM fouling. The study objectives focused on • demonstrating the effects of both hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions between NOM components and the membrane surface • determining influential factors (water quality and operational) in NOM rejection and flux-decline • determining major foulant components of NOM • developing NOM-rejection prediction equations and flux-decline (NOM adsorption) models

Effect of membrane properties and pretreatment on flux and NOM rejection in surface water nanofiltration
Nanofiltration (NF) is a compact process that has potential for removing organic and inorganic pollutants for drinking water. In this study, arious NF membranes for surface water treatment were compared using a batch-stirred cell and crossflow equipment in terms of solute rejection nd membrane flux. The rejection of natural organic matter (NOM) was closely related to ion rejection and membrane ...
متن کاملFouling Effects on Rejection in the Membrane Filtration of Natural Waters
Membrane processes in drinking water applications are micro(MF), ultra(UF), and nanofiltration (NF). These processes remove turbidity and bacteria (MF), viruses and macromolecules (UF) and small molecules and hardness (NF). Of particular concern in water treatment is the removal of natural organic matter (NOM) which contains potential disinfection by-product precursors. The presence of colloids...
متن کاملNanofiltration and Tight Ultrafiltration Membranes for Natural Organic Matter Removal—Contribution of Fouling and Concentration Polarization to Filtration Resistance
Nanofiltration (NF) and tight ultrafiltration (tight UF) membranes are a viable treatment option for high quality drinking water production from sources with high concentrations of contaminants. To date, there is limited knowledge regarding the contribution of concentration polarization (CP) and fouling to the increase in resistance during filtration of natural organic matter (NOM) with NF and ...
متن کاملNanofiltration of synthetic and industrial dye baths: Influence of temperature on rejection and membrane fouling
Nanofiltration (NF) has become a widely accepted process not only for producing drinking water but also for recovering wastewater in industrial processes or removing pollutants from industrial wastewater effluent. In the textile industry, the treatment of various dye baths with NF at room temperature have already been studied and was found feasible at lab-scale and pilot scale. The aim of this ...
متن کاملChemical Addition prior to Membrane Processes for Natural Organic Matter (NOM) Removal
Membrane processes for surface water treatment include microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF) and nanofiltration (NF), depending on the target material to be removed and the limiting process economics. MF will remove turbidity, but no dissolved compounds, unless associated with colloids, UF will, depending on the molecular weight cut off (MWCO), partially remove NOM, and NF will remove NOM ...
